Soccer can be a very weird game. My son's 7th grade team had a rematch
yesterday with a team that beat us at home 5 or 6 to nil just a couple of weeks ago.
The game yesterday was on their field, which is a full sized bigger than a football field soccer field, artificial turf. They play and practice on this regularly. Meanwhile all our other games have been on grass (much slower ball speed on the ground) and on a smaller field. Still within official 11 v 11 for 12 year old's size, but not anywhere close to a bigger than football field size.
I figured since they beat us pretty handily last time, and now they had the field and space familiarity we didn't, the game would likely end up worse.
Instead? Yeah, the other team absolutely dominated time of possession and shots, and even shots on goal. But the one really good shot we had? Nailed it. The 15 to 20 shots they had? Wide or high, by a little or a lot, on (let's say out of 17) 10 of them. Off the post on 1. Right to the goalie on 5 of them and 1 excellent save by our goalie.
Final, 1- Nil good guys. We DID play better than we have most of the season in terms of not allowing the other team good shots (thus why so many were off target), but the play was 80% plus in our end. The better team didn't win.....but I'll take it.
